    Description

Offered for sale is a wonderfully prepared, exceptionally clean, rust-free, restored example of the rare Chrysler Traveler 6 passenger touring sedan. Finished in enduringly tasteful and correct two-tone Catalina Tan and Rossini Brown, the Traveler was built and billed to be a multipurpose car very much akin to contemporary SUVs. With plenty of trunk space and a Town and Country roof rack, the Traveler was definitely a vacation and family utility vehicle, but with tons of chrome, swooping graceful lines, grained alligator hide interior and a six cylinder Spitfire engine with a Prestomatic Fluid Drive transmission, it could also be a smart, fashionable and luxurious businessman’s car.

This restored example is arguably the finest in existence. The two-tone finish is in excellent condition, deep, lustrous and marred only by the most insignificant of imperfections, none of which appear in any of the pictures. The car’s body is perfectly straight with excellent panel fit and consistent factory gaps. The chrome is in excellent condition, free of pitting, dings or other imperfections and all of the glass is in great original condition. The roof rack been redone and has impeccable chrome and wood inserts. The car shows no evidence of accidents or accident repair and has always been well taken care of, garaged and kept out of the elements. As such, the body and undercarriage are free of rust or rust repair. The interior is equally clean, in excellent completely original condition. The grained alligator front seat has a couple of imperfections evident in the pictures, however the material is readily available (we have a sample and contact information for the distributor) if you wanted to recover the seat section and make it perfect. The carpets and headliner are in fantastic original condition and the dash is wonderfully opulent and contemporary to the 50’s with sleek lines, a beautiful original clock and radio and incredible instrument cluster and steering wheel. The wheels and hubcaps are excellent and wrapped in nearly new wide white wall Firestone tires.

The car runs as good as it looks. Its original, numbers matching six cylinder 116 hp Spitfire engine always fires right up and pulls strongly and smoothly through each of the gears. The Prestomatic Fluid Drive transmission shifts as it should and the car is comfortable both around town and cruising at speed. The car drives straight and feels secure on the road, despite its significant size and heft (125.5” wheelbase and 3,800+ lb. curb weight). Compression is solid across all cylinders and the car has been thoroughly gone through to ensure a pleasant and reliable driving experience. Having resided up until this point resided at the Murphy Automotive Museum in Ventura, California this Traveler would be perfect for parades, events and “cars and coffee”. This is an exceptionally nice example of an exceptionally rare car. I guarantee you’ll not find a cleaner, more correct and well-showing example.
