Offered for sale is a gorgeous California black plate 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220S Cabriolet with a 4-speed manual gearbox. Always a California car, it has most recently been owned by a significant collector and has been extremely well cared for. This is an incredible opportunity to own such a special part of Mercedes’ past.
The exterior is beautiful. Every body panel, door, lid, etc. fits to perfection as it did from the factory. The chrome is brilliant and the original soft top shows some very light patina and is in great shape. While not show quality, the paint is very presentable, showing few minor imperfections. There is not a bit of rust on this cabriolet, structural or otherwise – the underside is flawless. As these cars are notorious for rust issues when not properly cared for, this car shows all original pans which is the best indicator of the car’s dry California life. The interior is absolutely gorgeous. The original patina on the red leather seats is beautiful. The original wood is excellent. The carpets are in great shape. The original radio works perfectly. As the pictures show, the car is stunning, turning heads wherever it goes.
This 220S is mechanically superb. It has always fired right up, free of smoke or vibration. The idle is as smooth as it was off the showroom in 58’. The compression is excellent. The manual gearbox shifts wonderfully through each of its four gears and the car pulls very strongly and precisely. You’ll not find a better weekend cruiser than this 220S Cabriolet.
