Offered for sale is a beautiful, solid and mechanically strong 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL finished in particularly tasteful, factory correct and exceedingly rare two-tone Havana Brown (DB408) and Papyrus White (DB717) over a Natural interior. For whatever reason, Mercedes’ two-tone color schemes (with the secondary color employed on wheel hubcaps and hard tops) never seem to add much to the cars, and in many cases they even detract. This is not the case with this example, the Papyrus White accenting the Havana Brown beautifully, helping to draw out the sophistication of the primary color. Havana Brown is wonderfully tasteful and era specific, wavering somewhere between brown and grey depending on the light.
It’s one of those timelessly elegant colors and it presents wonderfully on this example, the finish showing only minor imperfections, none of which were significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. The body is in excellent condition, very straight and with excellent panel fits and gaps throughout. The soft top has been replaced and shows only typical wear at the rear latching pin and the tires have plenty of remaining tread. The interior is fantastic, the seats and carpets reupholstered in the correct materials, presenting beautifully. The dash is free of cracks, the wood is in good condition and the car retains its Becker radio. This is by no means a show car, but as a nice weekend driver it’s one of the nicest and most unique that we’ve come across in a long time.
That’s especially true considering its mechanical integrity. The matching numbers engine fires right up, idles consistently and pulls strongly and crisply through each of its gears. The car drives and brakes straight, handles as it should and is an absolute joy on a sunny weekend afternoon, whether tooling through town or cruising down the highway. It provides all of that visceral, vintage drive quality while offering the secure feeling of Mercedes’ legendary engineering. The car has always been looked after and maintained, evidenced by the excellent, solid condition of its undercarriage.
If you’ve been looking for a gorgeous, honest and mechanically strong W113 SL “Pagoda” finished in a rare and elegant color combination, this car deserves your serious attention.
