    Description

Offered for sale is an exceptionally clean, mechanically strong and ceaselessly fun-to-drive 1972 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000. Finished in tasteful and era-specific Rosso Amaranto over a black interior, this car is particularly attractive as presented with a bevy of rally lights, vintage Alfa Romeo racing decals and Cromodora lightweight wheels. A California car from new, it has always been well looked after and maintained and never subjected to the elements. As such, both the body and the undercarriage are exceptionally solid and original, a significant point to make about any Alfa of this period, as a majority of them have fallen prey to corrosion over the years. The panel fits and gaps are factory correct and consistent and a magnet test reveals solid sheet metal throughout the car’s body.

Wonderfully sophisticated and factory correct, the Rosso Amaranto paint is rich and consistent and marred only by minor imperfections, none of which are significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. All of the glass is in excellent original shape, the chrome is entirely presentable, and while we feel the rally lights only enhance Giorgetto Guigiaro’s aggressive design, prospective buyers should know that they are readily reconfigurable and either some or all of them can be easily removed based on the next owner’s preferences. The Cromodora wheels are in excellent condition and are wrapped in tires with plenty of remaining tread.

The car’s interior is equally clean, with the seats, carpets and interior panels all in great shape. The original upholstery on the front seats was beginning to look a bit tatty, so the prior owner had the seats refurbished in black leather. While utilizing the original seat frames, he and his upholsterer decided on a considerably more comfortable configuration and, while the pattern isn’t original, the seats look quite smart and entirely appropriate for the era. Hardly ever used, the original rear seats are in excellent original condition, which is also true of the headliner.

With smooth and ample power and go-cart handling, this GTV is an absolute blast to drive. The 91K miles showing on the odometer is believed to be original mileage and the well-cared-for, original, numbers matching 1962 cc DOHC Inline 4 cylinder engine starts effortlessly, idles consistently and pulls strongly and smoothly through each of the original 5-speed transmission’s gears. The engine’s compression is excellent and the SPICA fuel injection works as it should. The four wheel disc brakes bring the car safely to stop and steering and cornering is precise.

The GT Veloce is arguably the last Alfa to truly be considered a classic and the final iteration, the 2000 GTV, embodies the perfect blend of a more modern drivability and power while retaining all of the visceral thrill of the earlier cars. Partially due to the rapid appreciation of other preceding Alfa models, partially due to the timeless Bertone design and partially due to the fact that relatively few solid examples are left, 2000 GTV values have been steadily on the rise for the last few years. With the market showing no signs of slowing, this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautiful, solid, mechanically strong, fun-to-drive and appreciating classic.
